
The Newton Varsity Eagles turned in a dominant all-around performance Friday, shutting out Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City 11-0 at Jasper County Boys & Girls Park.
After a steady start, Newton broke the game wide open with an explosive eight-run fifth inning, putting the contest out of reach and showcasing the Eagles’ depth at the plate.
Newton got on the board early in the first inning when David Ferguson delivered an RBI single to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. They added two more runs in the fourth before erupting in the fifth.
During the big inning, Drake Wolf drew a walk and scored, Dominic Baltzell singled home a run, and Carson Barthelme and Maddox Horner each delivered doubles to drive in runs. Dexter Fulton added an RBI single, and Quincy Fulton capped the inning with a two-run home run to center field.
The Eagles finished with 12 hits on the day. Baltzell, Horner, Ferguson, Fulton, and Barthelme each collected two hits, while Baltzell, Fulton, and Barthelme each drove in two runs. Quincy Fulton also added two stolen bases as Newton totaled five steals as a team.
On the mound, Newton’s pitching staff was nearly untouchable. Gavin Meinhart got the start and was sharp, allowing just one hit over three innings while striking out six. Chance Mulvey earned the win in relief, tossing two hitless innings with three strikeouts and no walks.
Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City managed just two hits in the game, coming from Isaac Wells and Cayden Ondes.
Newton’s defense backed up the pitching effort, committing just one error and turning a double play.
