The Newton Community High School tennis team put together a strong stretch of competition, earning solid results in separate meets against Mt. Carmel and the Casey-Westfield cooperative.
Newton vs. Mt. Carmel
Newton won five of six varsity singles matches against Mt. Carmel.
Olivia Sornberger defeated Hazel Earnest 8-1 at No. 1 singles, while Beth Brocious picked up an 8-6 victory over Alivia Peach at No. 2.
Scarlett Collins defeated Hadlie Scott 8-2 at No. 3, and Jenna Hall earned an 8-5 win over Kate Andrews at No. 4.
Jordyn Kocher added an 8-1 victory over Bayley Andrews at No. 5.
Mt. Carmel’s lone singles win came at No. 6, where Adrienne Lawrence defeated Newton’s Emma Walker in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (7-4).
In doubles, Mt. Carmel’s Hazel Earnest and Alivia Peach defeated Newton’s Collins and Brocious 8-0 at No. 1.
Newton answered at No. 2, with Sornberger and Hall defeating Madi Riggs and Kate Andrews 8-1.
At No. 3 doubles, Newton’s Lexi Ochs and Riley Rauch defeated Addison Tennis and Bayley Andrews. No final score was recorded.
Newton vs. Casey-Westfield
On a separate meet day, Newton turned in an even stronger performance against the Casey-Westfield cooperative, sweeping all six varsity singles matches.
Sornberger defeated Daisy Mumford 10-3 at No. 1 singles. Brocious followed with a 10-7 victory over Gracie Taylor at No. 2.
Collins defeated Ella Whitacre 10-3 at No. 3, while Hall earned a 10-3 win over Destiny Budd at No. 4.
Kocher defeated Brylee Spittler 10-4 at No. 5, and Walker completed the singles sweep with a 10-1 victory over Olivia Whitacre at No. 6.
Newton also captured two of three doubles matches.
At No. 1 doubles, Collins and Brocious defeated Whitacre and Taylor 10-1.
Sornberger and Hall teamed up at No. 2 doubles and defeated Lydia Wilson and Ava Seaton 10-2.
Casey-Westfield claimed the No. 3 doubles match, with Spittler and Mumford defeating Newton’s Ochs and Riley Rauch 10-3.
Across the two meets, Newton’s varsity singles lineup went a combined 11-1. Sornberger, Brocious, Collins, Hall and Kocher each recorded two singles victories, while Walker went 1-1.
The Eagles also finished 4-2 in the six completed doubles matches between the two meets, continuing to show the depth of Newton’s tennis program throughout the lineup.
