Eagles Fall in Home Opener to Shelbyville

The Newton Eagles opened their season at home facing the Shelbyville Rams in a non-conference game. Due to the heat, the game began at 8 instead of 7. Despite  a hard fought battle, the Eagles fell to the Rams with a final score of 42-7. 

The Rams scored two touchdowns in the first quarter when 14 ran the ball from the 9 yard line to the endzone with the two point conversion being good as 14 handed off the ball to Caden Shasteen who carried the ball into the end zone. The second touchdown of the first quarter occurred when 14 handed off the ball to LAndon Walls at the 7 who carried the ball into the endzone. 14 then handed off the ball to Seth Tope who ran the ball from the 6 but was tackled by Meyer Tarr before reaching the end zone. 

In the second quarter, Shelbyville scored three touchdowns. The first being when 14 threw the ball from the Rams 28 to Jack Jokisch on the Rams 36 who then carried the ball into the end zone. (69 yard gain) 14 then carries the ball in for the two point conversion. The second touchdown occurs when 14 drops back to the Eagles 16 throwing a pass to Joel Wiley who runs the ball from the Eagles 8 to the endzone for a 13 yard gain. 14 then hands the ball to Landon Wallis who carries it into the endzone for the two point conversion. The third touchdown came when 14 hands off the ball to Wallis at the Eagles 9 who then carried the ball into the endzone for a six yard gain. The two point conversion is no good when Parker Shaffer and Evan Baltzell tackle 14. 

The final two touchdowns of the game were split between the Rams and the Eagles. The Rams scored their final touchdown of the game when 14 handed the ball off at the Eagles 18 to Wallis who ran the ball to the endzone for a 15 yard gain. 14 then threw an incomplete pass during the attempt at a two point conversion. 

The lone touchdown for the Eagles came when Max Meinhart handed off the ball at the Rams 4 to Byron Ashley who ran the ball into the endzone.. Hayden Mulvey kicked a good extra point. 

Max Meinhart had 11 completed passes with 118 total yards. 

The Eagles will travel to Paxton on Friday, September 1st with kickoff at 7 pm.
