Newton’s Wickham, Schackmann, and 4×800 Relay Qualify for State with Standout Performances

The Newton Eagles made a major impact at the recent sectional track and field meet, with multiple athletes punching their tickets to the IHSA State Finals. Leading the way were senior Wade Wickham, junior Owen Schackmann, and the 4×800 meter relay team, each turning in exceptional performances to earn state qualification.

Wade Wickham Dominates in the Field

Senior Wade Wickham showcased his strength and versatility by qualifying for state in two events. In the discus, Wickham launched a personal-best throw of 42.06 meters, securing 2nd place and solidifying his place among the top throwers in the state. He followed that up in the pole vault, clearing 3.70 meters to take 3rd place and clinch his second state berth of the meet.

Wickham’s performance not only demonstrates his consistency throughout the season but also sets the stage for a strong showing at the state level.

Owen Schackmann Hurdles His Way to State

Junior Owen Schackmann turned in a pair of gritty, high-level performances in the hurdles. In the 110-meter hurdles, Schackmann claimed 2nd place with a blazing 15.88 seconds, a new personal record. He kept the momentum going in the 300-meter hurdles, grabbing 3rd place in another PR time of 42.59 seconds.

With state qualifications in both events, Schackmann has emerged as one of the top hurdlers in the region and will be a strong contender at the state meet.

4×800 Relay Team Takes the Crown

Newton’s distance crew proved unstoppable in the 4×800-meter relay, where the quartet of Jackson Sornberger, Parker Harris, Tanner Whitaker, and Hayden Borgic raced to 1st place in 8:30.88. The win not only earned the group a sectional title but also secured their spot at state.

The team’s smooth handoffs, consistent pacing, and competitive edge were on full display, and they’ll look to carry that momentum into Charleston for the state finals.
