Eagles Struggle Early in 7-1 Loss to Teutopolis

The Newton Varsity Eagles couldn’t overcome an early surge from Teutopolis, falling 7-1 on Tuesday at Jasper County Boys and Girls Park.

Teutopolis wasted no time setting the tone, plating two runs in the first inning before adding three more in the second to take a commanding 5-0 lead. Newton found itself playing from behind the rest of the night.

Despite the deficit, the Eagles showed some fight late. Newton broke through in the bottom of the seventh inning when Gavin Meinhart drove in the team’s lone run. Meinhart led the Eagles offensively, going 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Newton scattered six hits on the evening, with Drew Baltzell, Ryan Tharp, Mason Horner, and Drew Wolf each collecting one. The Eagles also turned a double play defensively.

On the mound, Carson Barthelme took the loss after allowing five runs on seven hits over two innings while striking out two. Eli Wolf provided solid relief, working five innings and giving up two runs on five hits while striking out five.

Teutopolis finished with 12 hits and capitalized on early opportunities, highlighted by a two-run homer from Davin Worman and a strong outing on the mound from Austin Borries, who struck out nine and did not issue a walk.
