The Newton Eagles erased a 15-point halftime deficit and scored 20 unanswered points in the second half to defeat the Paris Tigers 35-29 Friday night, Sept. 25, at Newton.
Paris jumped in front early and carried a 15-0 advantage into the second quarter before Newton’s offense found its rhythm.
The Eagles got on the board in the second quarter when Quincy Fulton powered into the end zone on a 1-yard touchdown run. Later in the quarter, quarterback Hayden Mulvey connected with Maddox Horner for a 55-yard touchdown, pulling Newton even at 15-15 just before halftime. Newton followed the touchdown with a successful two-point conversion, with Eli Wolf carrying the ball into the end zone.
Horner continued to make an impact in the second half. Mulvey connected with him for a 10-yard touchdown early in the third quarter, giving the Eagles their first lead of the night. Later in the quarter, Mulvey found Horner for a spectacular 62-yard touchdown, putting Newton ahead 29-21.
Paris answered with another touchdown to cut the margin, but Newton responded in the fourth quarter when Horner scored his fourth touchdown of the night on a 2-yard run. The extra point was missed, leaving the Eagles with a 35-29 advantage.
Horner finished the night with seven receptions for 165 yards and three receiving touchdowns. He also rushed 15 times for 103 yards and another touchdown, giving him 268 total yards from scrimmage and four touchdowns.
Mulvey completed 13 of 24 passes for 225 yards and three touchdowns, with all three touchdown passes going to Horner.
Fulton added 44 rushing yards and a touchdown on seven carries while catching four passes for 37 yards. Wolf contributed 14 receiving yards and scored on a two-point conversion.
Paris produced 515 yards of total offense, including 338 rushing yards, but Newton’s defense held the Tigers scoreless in the fourth quarter. The Eagles recorded 76 total tackles, led by William Michl with 12. Grayson Lingafelter and Beau Bennett each recorded eight tackles.
Newton finished with 18 first downs compared with Paris’ 17 and converted both of its fourth-down attempts.
After trailing 15-0, Newton rallied to tie the game by halftime before taking control in the second half and securing the 35-29 Homecoming victory.
